If you’ve filled a prescription lately, you’ve no doubt noticed how the cost of drugs just keeps going up. Today more and more people are seeking coverage for prescription drugs as well as for other aspects of their healthcare.

As with other health expenses, it’s a comfort to know that you are covered ahead of time in case you ever end up having to pay for expensive drugs, especially on an on-going basis.

Plans that cover prescription drugs can be purchased either as "stand alone" policies or, often at a savings, as an add-on to an existing health plan. There are a range of options.

Different Types of Prescription Drug Plans

  • Plans which use a network of participating pharmacies, in order to keep expenses down. If you use a network pharmacy, your costs will be lower.

  • Deductible plans which, like ordinary health plans, cover your drug costs after you have paid the deductible. In general, the higher the deductible, the lower the plan rate. These often require you to pay up-front and file a claim for reimbursement.

  • Discount Card Plans in which you can use your card to get discounts at certain pharmacies.

  • Plans specifically designed to work with a Health Saving Account (HSA) policy.

Prescription Options for Seniors

Prescription drug coverage is of special concern for seniors (those 65 years and over) who need to choose whether to purchase Medicare Part D. Whether you choose drug coverage through Medicare or not, it’s important that you do have a policy.  For more information, you can visit the government website at  www.medicare.gov or contact one of the insurance providers on the Texas-Health-Plans Providers List to discuss your options.
