It is as important for Texas residents to stay on top of their state's insurance regulations. With a population that is second only to California, the Lonestar State inevitably faces insurance crises on a large scale. Fortunately, the Department of Insurance in Texas has worked hard to ensure that both individuals and families who need coverage are being met with policies that are reasonable in cost and effectiveness.

Health Insurance Rights in Texas (TX)

  • Grandparents may add a grandchild onto a health insurance policy, as long as the policy covers dependents and the grandchild is under twenty-five, unmarried and dependent on the grandparent for care.

  • Disabled children may remain covered on a policy-holder's plan into adulthood, as long as continued disability of the child can be indicated.

  • Newborns and children who are adopted are automatically covered for the first month of life under their parents' plan, as long as the plan offers family coverage. Parents usually have to enroll their child in their own policy after the first month.

  • All insurance carriers in Texas have to offer one plan that includes "basic" coverage such as childhood immunizations and women well-visits. The policy owner is left with the task of sludging through which carriers offer what plans.

Texas Health Insurance Risk Pool

Because of the nature of individual health policies, insurance companies may deny coverage to those who have certain medical conditions or health status. For these people, however, there is the Texas Health Insurance Risk Pool, which offers health coverage to people who have not been able to get an individual insurance policy due to their health. To be eligible for the Texas Health Pool, applicants must be able to show that they have attempted to receive coverage from traditional insurance carriers and have been denied.

Once accepted into the Risk Pool, members can expect to receive access to their choice of four PPO plans, each with their own deductible and co-insurance options, and each including coverage for hospitalization, physician care, prescription drugs, and maternity services, in addition to other services.
