Whether you're relocating to Texas to start a new job or to partake in the southern hospitality (the Texas motto is friendship), you've picked a unique state. It is a melting pot of various cultures, including Hispanic, German, English, African-American and Asian.

With a 5.1% state-wide unemployment rate in mid-2005, Texas is a great place to go job-searching, if you don't already have a position. Here,  you'll be able to save some of the paycheck you make to travel to the ocean, visit Austin's music scene, or maybe go to a nearby dude ranch; there is no state tax, and a lower-than-average cost-of-living.

Making the Move

If you're moving to Texas in summer, you'll want to make sure you have a good wardrobe of summer clothes and a healthy amount of sunblock. Summers are hot and dry, but stormy, and it is highly likely that you'll become familiar with the word “tornado.”

With the largest percentage of un-insured people in the country, at just over a quarter of the state population, Texas has initiated a number of new health programs, including one to better pre-natal care for low-income women. In addition to this, state legislature has increased the state aid eligibility limit to 200% of the national poverty level.

You are usually given thirty days from the time that you become employed in the state, sign a lease or enroll your kids in school, to obtain a Texas ID or driver's license. You will need a Texas license to register to vote in the state, so it will be in your best interest to make the Bureau of Motor Vehicles one of your first stops when you've settled. Then you can sit back, enjoy the Texas sunset and some down home southern hospitality, meals and friendships included.
