Currently, there is a higher ratio of children living in poverty throughout Texas than in any other state. In 2001, 20% of the state's children were receiving state-funded medical assistance.
Through local and national government, people of all ages and health status are now receiving better opportunities to receive health care.

Recent Developments in Texas Health Care
- Recently, Texas was awarded a five-year grant from SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse/Mental Health Services Administration, in order to improve the quality of life of those suffering from mental abuse. This included funds to help those afflicted through recovery programs and increased mental health services.
- Low-income women who are pregnant will have better access to quality pre-natal care through the expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). Without requiring a program waiver for care, pregnant women receive faster service with less paperwork. Women with a household income of up to 200% of the poverty level are eligible for this program.
- Children living in families that are eligible for SCHIP can now receive dental health care as well as traditional health coverage. This includes cleanings, x-rays, tooth removal and root canals.
An increasing number of people are now eligible to receive health care in the state of Texas. With this added protection, all residents of Texas have access to quality and affordable coverage.
